Struggling with Digestion? Discover 6 Ayurvedic Tips for a Healthier Gut

  1. Eat Right for Your Body Type

With so many dietary trends and conflicting advice—raw vs. cooked, vegan vs. high-protein—it can be overwhelming to know what’s best for you. Ayurveda offers a personalised approach that helps you understand your unique body type and constitution. This knowledge allows you to choose the right foods, the best form of exercise, and the lifestyle habits that suit you. If you’re unsure where to start, take our quick quiz to discover your Ayurvedic body type and get a customised roadmap to good health. Start your Health Dynamics test here

  1. Calm Your Mind

Research shows that stress has a direct impact on gut health. Studies from the Art of Living and other organisations have found that simple breathing exercises and meditation reduce cortisol levels, which helps lower stress, decrease cardiovascular risks, reduce signs of aging, and improve the brain’s ability to manage emotions. Spending time in nature or practising mindfulness can significantly enhance your gut health and overall well-being. Breathing is FREE but has many health benefits.

  1. Avoid Overeating

Overeating has become a global issue, with more people now obese than underweight. Consuming excessive amounts of food or eating the wrong foods for your body type can weaken your digestive fire (Agni). In Ayurveda, overeating and ignoring the natural rhythms of hunger disrupt the balance of vata, pitta, and kapha. I often advise my clients to eat only when they are genuinely hungry, which can challenge ingrained beliefs like finishing everything on your plate. If you can’t eat a full meal you should eat six small meals daily. Listening to your body’s signals is key to maintaining a strong digestive fire.

  1. Detox Regularly

Periodic detoxing is one of the best ways to reset your digestive system and recharge your health for the long term. An Ayurvedic detox can range from a simple one-day fast to a comprehensive 28-day program, depending on your goals and circumstances. The purpose of an Ayurvedic detox is to balance the body’s energies—vata (space/air), pitta (fire/water), and kapha (earth/water)—to eliminate toxins and restore Agni’s strength. After completing a detox, clients experience a surge of energy and a renewed sense of vitality.

  1. Incorporate Detox Teas

Herbal detox teas are a simple yet powerful way to cleanse the body of toxins. One of my favourites is CCF tea, made from coriander, cumin, and fennel seeds. This traditional Ayurvedic blend has been used for thousands of years to support digestion and detoxify the body naturally. You can easily align your daily habits with nature by setting up your kitchen pantry as your personal medicine cabinet. 1. Eat Your Largest Meal at Lunchtime

In Ayurveda, agni is strongest when the sun is at its peak—around noon. This is when your digestive power is most efficient, so eating your largest meal at lunchtime allows your body to absorb and assimilate nutrients properly. Avoid eating at your desk; instead, focus on your meal, allowing your body to benefit from the nourishment fully.
