The Health Problems Spring Causes (And How to Avoid Them)

Jacarandas are blooming. Your body is still stuck in winter. Here’s what’s actually going on, and the simple home remedies that help it move.

You know the morning. The air’s already thick before you’ve boiled the kettle. It clings to your skin. And somehow, even though the sun’s up earlier and the jacarandas are turning the streets purple, you feel denser than you did in the middle of July.

If that’s been you these last few weeks, I want you to hear this clearly: you’re not imagining it, and there’s nothing wrong with you.

Spring here doesn’t arrive as a clean reset. It arrives as warmth stacked on top of everything winter left behind. And in clinic right now, I’m hearing the same story on repeat: foggy head. Thicker mucus. Bowels that have gone quiet. A body that’s asking for one more hour in bed, no matter how much sleep it got.

Here’s the part that changes everything once you understand it.

In Ayurveda, this is Kapha season: the qualities of earth and water. In balance, Kapha is a gift: stability, calm strength, the kind of steadiness that gets you through winter. But over the cooler months, it quietly stacks up. Richer dinners. Less movement outdoors. Earlier nights, later mornings. Cold and damp settle into the tissues, layer by layer, mostly without you noticing.

Then spring warms the air, and everything winter stored starts to soften and move. The classical teaching here is opposites, not likeness: heat, the one quality winter didn’t give us, is exactly what melts what cold and damp built up. We call this Kapha melt. It’s exactly why spring can feel messier than winter, even though the days are longer and lighter.

But melting is not the same as clearing.

This is the piece almost everyone misses. If your Agni (your digestive fire) is strong, your body processes what’s being released and moves it out. If Agni is sluggish (and after a few months of heavier food and looser routine, it usually is), that released material doesn’t leave. It becomes Ä€ma: sticky, undigested residue that shows up as congestion, bloating, dull skin, or that particular exhaustion where nothing is technically “wrong” but you feel wrecked anyway.

So the heaviness you’re feeling isn’t a willpower problem. It isn’t bad luck with the weather. It’s seasonal physiology meeting a digestive fire that needs support, not another green smoothie forced down on a muggy morning, and definitely not an iced coffee by the river.

Notice this, without trying to fix any of it yet:

  • Do you feel heavier after breakfast than before it?

  • Is your tongue coated when you wake, especially toward the back?

  • Does motivation show up late, then crash by mid-afternoon?

  • Are your sinuses or chest thicker on humid mornings?

  • Have you started getting allergies and sinus issues?

Every one of those is useful information. It’s your body reporting that Kapha is on the move. This is also exactly why spring has traditionally been the season for a proper clear-out, not panic restriction, but a considered, gradual build toward deeper work. Our next detox opens Monday 2 November 2026. That’s not today’s conversation. We’re only planting the seed. First, we understand the season together. Then, over the next few weeks, we work with it.

This week: don’t fight the heaviness. Name it. Take some load off Agni. Warm your mornings instead of shocking them. Keep dinners lighter than usual. Walk while the air is still cool. In Kapha season, small and steady beats heroic every time.

If you’ve felt “off” since August tipped into September, let this be your reframe. Nothing about you is randomly broken. The season is doing exactly what the season does. Your job this week is simply to help the melt leave cleanly.
